Introduction
The 20th century is known as the atomic age.As it begans, scientists were trying to find out if atoms, which they had thought were the smallest particles of a substance, were made up of even smaller particles.
They suceeded in splitting in the atom in 1919.This knowledge has produced the terryfying weapon of the atomic bomb.It has also led to atomic or nuclear power, with its benefits and drawback.
Marie curie's work with radioactive elements provided the foundation for the atomic age.She discovered the element radium, which naturally gives off radioactivity as its atoms split apart.Marie curie carried out her research at a time when radioactivity was not understood at all.
She had to also struggle with lack of money and recognition, against illness, and against those who mistakenly believed that a women could not be a real scientist.
Eventually, Marie curie became world famous and won two noble prizes.Today, she is considered as one of the great pioneers of science.
